The texts we can hear here, read by actor Hilton Cobra, were published in Diário do Rio de Janeiro between 1821 and 1831. The rendition of the Rio newspaper’s “Advertisements” section gives us the detailed, precise dimension of the unprecedented violence involved in the intense traffic of enslaved Africans. In this market, the supply and demand of human beings is intermingled, with appalling indifference, with the circulation of goods of all kinds.
