LITTLE AFRICAS
Clementina de Jesus (1901-1987) began her career in Rosa de ouro [Golden Rose], a show created by Hermínio Bello de Carvalho that premiered at Rio de Janeiro’s Teatro Jovem in March of 1965. Also staged in São Paulo and Salvador, Rosa de ouro brought back singer Aracy Cortes, introduced the young Paulinho da Viola and brought together generations of samba, such as Elton Medeiros, Jair do Cavaquinho, Anescar and Nelson Sargento. The performances were recorded on an album, which was also Clementina’s first, and over the next five years she would feature on six LPs, either jointly or solo.
