Stefania Bril

Disobedience Through Affection

A Polish photographer who emigrated to Brazil in the years following World War II, Stefania Bril (1922–1992) developed her body of work primarily during the 1970s. She played a key role as a critic and curator, actively working to build a cultural circuit for photography in Brazil during the country's democratic opening. Featuring new prints — many never before seen — alongside vintage prints and archival materials, the exhibition highlights the distinctiveness of her photographic gaze: one cast in a feminine key, grounded in affection and disobedience to dominant logics, alongside her pedagogical commitment to promoting the art of photography.

Stefania Bril: Disobedience Through Affection premiered at IMS Paulista from August 2024 to January 2025, marking the artist’s first solo exhibition in nearly five decades.
