The exhibition Walter Firmo: at the heart of silence is the synthesis of the cry of pain, which visited several cities after opening at IMS Paulista in 2022, features works produced from 1950, the beginning of the photographer's career, until 2021. The images portray and praise the country's black culture, recording festivals and rites, both popular and religious, as well as everyday scenes.
Since his early phase, Walter Firmo has incorporated into his photography the construction of a language that elaborates meaning through directed and staged images, with an awareness of origins – racial, social, and cultural – amalgamated with a desire to question the canons of documentary photography and photojournalism.
IMS has made every effort to identify and locate the holders of the image rights of the people depicted in the photographs, and welcomes any additional information in this regard.
